Malayalam cinema has witnessed a rise in number of movies that crossed the Rs 100-crore club this year. However, despite this huge achievement, including the roaring success of 'Manjummel Boys', the film industry did not have a stellar run in 2024.
Only 22 films, of the total 206 movies that released this year, managed to give the producers financial gains. As per rough estimates, the producers have suffered losses of at least Rs 100 crore this year. As this has put the industry, which banked on a slew of revenue streams including Television, satellite and OTT, under severe strain, the number of releases next year are expected to come down significantly next year.
This year, the industry had 206 releases in 2024, and, with Mohanlal’s debut directorial venture Barroz set to hit theatres on X’mas day, the figure will go up to 207. That is a slight dip from 222 movies that saw the light of the day in 2023.

Hit chart
'Manjummel Boys' leads the pack in super hit movies, buoyed also by the terrific run in Tamil box office. Eleven movies made it to the super hit chart in 2024. The Kerala Film Chamber released the estimates based on the collection of these movies from theaters alone. Latest releases 'Rifle Club' and 'Marco' are also expected to figure in super hit list going by the initial collection.
Of the super hit movies, all but three were directed by young directors. The soaring production expense is a key reason for the present crisis. A movie’s production expense per day is about Rs 5 lakh. Stars have also shown reluctance to adjust their pay packet by sticking to the figures they reaped when satellite and OTT revenues skyrocketed, producers said.
In 2025, the number of films expected would register a 33 per cent drop, according to Saji Nanthyattu, secretary, Film Chamber. Soaring expenses, selective audiences and the aversion to cinema industry created by the Hema Committee revelations are the key factors contributing to the downside.
