Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' secured two nominations at the Golden Globe Awards on Monday, being recognised in the categories of Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language and Best Director – Motion Picture.
The film made history in May by becoming the first Indian movie to win the prestigious Grand Prix at Cannes. Since then, it has received numerous awards and nominations as Hollywood enters its annual awards season, culminating in the Oscars.
At the Golden Globes, 'All We Imagine As Light', which tells the story of two Malayali nurses working in Mumbai and their friend, a cook, will compete in the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category against 'Emilia Perez' (France), 'The Girl With the Needle' (Poland), 'I'm Still Here' (Brazil), 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig' (US), and 'Vermiglio' (Italy).
In the Best Director category at the 82nd Golden Globes, Kapadia will face competition from Brady Corbet, director of 'The Brutalist', Coralie Fargeat of 'The Substance', Edward Berger of 'Conclave', Jacques Audiard, director of 'Emilia Perez', and Sean Baker for 'Anora'.
Kapadia’s feature debut has received widespread international acclaim since its premiere at Cannes, where it not only earned the second-highest award but was also one of the best-reviewed films of the festival.
The 39-year-old director, a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), previously directed the acclaimed short film 'Afternoon Clouds' and the documentary 'A Night of Knowing Nothing'.
Although the film was not selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category, it is expected to earn nominations in the general categories at the Oscars.
Recently, 'All We Imagine As Light' was named Best International Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and won the same award at the Gotham Awards.
The film also topped Sight and Sound magazine's annual list of the 50 best films of the year. Distributed in the US by Janus Films and Sideshow, the film was released across India in November by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media.
Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, Kapadia’s film explores love and friendship in Mumbai through the lives of three women – two Malayali nurses, Prabha and Anu, and their friend, Parvati. The 2025 Golden Globes will take place on January 5 in Los Angeles.
