Kochi: K G George, who was widely regarded as one of the finest directors in Malayalam cinema, was cremated here on Tuesday evening. The mortal remains of the filmmaker, which was kept at the Ernakulam Town Hall from Tuesday morning, was taken to the Ravipuram crematorium at 4.30 pm for cremation.

Filmmakers B Unnikrishnan, Sibi Malayil, Kamal and Renji Panicker paid homage to the veteran filmmaker. Actors Lal, Siddique, Narain, Kunchacko Boban, Edavela Babu and Shine Tom Chacko paid their last respects to the director at the Ernakulam Town Hall. Film distributor and producer Listin Stephen and Anto Joseph were also present. Hundreds of people, from different walks of life, also paid their last respects to the master filmmaker.

K G George passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 77 at an old age home in Kakkanad. He was brought to the centre in 2018 after suffering a stroke. George's wife Selma who is a well-known singer is settled in Goa with their son Arun, while daughter Thara is residing in Qatar. The family arrived for the final rites.

George, who won the national award for best feature film for his debut movie 'Swapnadanam' in 1975, is known for his significant contributions to Malayalam cinema. His films like 'Yavanika', 'Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback' and 'Irakal' are celebrated works and considered as benchmarks in Malayalam cinema. 'Elavamkodu Desam', which released in 1998, was his final work.
