The Malayali movie-goers got a hint of the love story of superstar Mohanlal and his wife Suchitra in a climax scene of the 1999 movie 'Megham' directed by Priyadarshan. In the scene Mammootty’s character asks Sreenivasan, “Didn’t a Suchitra wait for our Mohanlal in Chennai?”
Recently, producer Suresh Balaje, who is also Suchitra’s brother, opened up in an interview to a magazine about the love story of Mohanlal and Suchitra.
Mohanlal and Suchitra married on April 28, 1988 in a lavish wedding ceremony. Suresh revealed that his sister had become a great fan of Mohanlal after watching his movies. They had been writing letters to each other as well. However, Suchitra’s family members were unaware about her admiration to the screen icon and the fact that the couple exchanged letters. “Suchi kept it a secret from us. Later when we realised her love, an aunt of mine approached Lal’s family with the marriage proposal. It was an arranged marriage. But even before that Suchitra was madly in love with Mohanlal,” revealed Suresh.
The producer admitted that it was Mohanlal who encouraged him to resume his interests in the movies which the former had given up at some point.
In the interview, Suresh said that his father had a spat with a leading actor regarding the rights of a movie. This had prompted his family to give up production of movies. However, they made a comeback when Mohanlal became a part of their family after he married Suchitra.
After a hiatus, Suresh made a stunning return as a producer when his newly formed Sithara Combines bankrolled the 1991 movie 'Ulladakkam' starring Mohanlal, Amala and Shobana in the lead roles.
