Oachira: Three youths have been arrested for ramming a car into a police jeep and injuring three police officials, including a sub-inspector, in Oachira early on Sunday morning. The incident happened when they wanted to escape a police barricade while speeding on the national highway without stopping at four police checkpoints.

The arrested have been identified as Shine (31) of PVP House, Pallikkal, Madavoor in Kilimanoor; Tharattayil Veetil Rajesh (38) of Pallikkal and his relative Shibu (39) of Tharattayil.

The injured were identified as Grade SI CV Vijayakumar, 50, of Oachira police station, Krishnakumar, 35, an AR camp police official, and Kaviraj, 58, a home guard. They have been admitted to a hospital in Karunagappaly.

The car was first spotted overspeeding by the Coastal Police near the Neendakara bridge on the National Highway. The details of the car were then transmitted wirelessly to other police stations. Attempts by the city control unit and the police in Chavara, Karunagapally and Oachira to stop the car failed.

Later, a highway patrol team set up a barricade at Oachira at the Kollam district border and tried to stop the car.

The car crashed into the Oachira police jeep while trying to escape in the opposite direction after seeing the barricade.

Krishnakumar and Kaviraj, who were in the jeep, fell out. Vijayakumar was trapped in the jeep and was seriously injured.

The police said Shine was driving the car. They found bottles of liquor in the vehicle. The accused were produced in court and remanded in custody.
