New Delhi: Gayatri Srikrishnan, one of the earliest female playback singers in the Malayalam film industry, passed away in Delhi on Sunday. She was 75.
She passed away at the Delhi residence of her son and noted flautist G S Rajan.
Her first song was 'Thekoonu namalloru chakka vangi...' for the 1956 film 'Rarichan Enna Pouran'. However, it is the evergreen song 'Nazhiyuri Palu Kondu nadake kalyanam' from the same film that made her popular. She sung it along with Shantha P Nair.
Gayatri was born in Kochi in 1934. She was a staff singer with the All-India Radio, Kozhikode.
G S Sreekrishnan, her former colleague there, is her husband.
The couple has a daughter, named Sujatha, too. Their daughter-in-law Anjana Rajan is a dancer and art critic.
In Kerala, the family is based at CH Colony, Vellimadukunnu, in Kozhikode district.
