Aby Rajesh Thomas from Thiruvananthapuram was just a sixth-grader when cancer first entered his life, bringing fear and uncertainty. It all started with leg pain, leading his family to consult their close family friend and paediatric oncologist, Dr. Boben Thomas. On October 6, 2017, Aby was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
Soon after, a tumour developed beneath Aby's knee. A pivotal moment in his treatment came when the family learned that the affected bone could be surgically removed and replaced with an artificial one. The artificial bone had the advantage of being adjustable as Aby grew, making it the best option for him. Throughout this journey, Dr. Boben provided support, guiding Aby through chemotherapy and every step of the treatment.
The surgery was successful, and after six months of intense treatment, Aby triumphed over cancer. On April 28, 2018, doctors confirmed he was cancer-free. Early detection and accurate diagnosis were vital factors in Aby’s recovery.
After returning to his studies, Aby’s life took on new meaning. His dream of becoming an engineer shifted toward a new goal—to become a doctor, inspired by the very professionals who had saved his life. The care and dedication shown by his doctors left an indelible mark on him, igniting his desire to enter the medical field.
With hard work and determination, Aby achieved a commendable rank in the NEET-UG (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate) examination, securing admission to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. His medical journey will begin this October. Aby, son of Rajesh and Sheeba of Kalungil Veettil, Kazhakoottam, now dreams of becoming a compassionate doctor, dedicated to alleviating the pain and suffering of others.
