Child of trans-couple watches parent win first prize in Bharatanatyam at MGU Arts Fest

Kottayam: In a momentous celebration at the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) Arts Festival being held in Kottayam, the 'Justice' venue at the BCM College witnessed a groundbreaking event during the Bharatanatyam competition. Ziya Paval P, a participant in the transgender category from SH College, Thevara, graced the stage while her transgender partner, Zahhad Fazil, proudly watched with their daughter Zabiya Zahhad in the audience.

Zabiya, cradled in Zahhad's arms, delightedly witnessed Ziya's mesmerizing dance. The crowning moment occurred when Ziya shared the first prize with another talented participant, Thanvi Suresh, creating a sense of 'justice' prevailing in the air. 

Ziya and Zahhad proudly hold the title of being the first transgender couple to become parents in India. Zabiya, now a year old, added charm to the festival atmosphere. Ziya, a student at Sacred Heart (SH) College in Thevara, made her debut in the MG University festival.

Sharing the first prize in the Bharatanatyam competition in the transgender category, Ziya, along with Thanvi Suresh from RLV College Of Music And Fine Arts, Trippunithura, showcased exceptional talent. Notably, Sanjana Chandran of St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, and Akrithi of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, and secured an 'A' grade in the event held late on Monday evening. The event not only celebrated artistic excellence but also marked a significant step towards inclusivity and acceptance in cultural competitions.
