Toronto: Canada has decided to introduce a cap on international students considering the high unemployment rate in the country and shortage of housing. The announcement was made by Canada’s immigration minister Mark Miller during an interview to a media organisation in his country. The minister, however, did not reveal any numbers.
Expressing concern over the large influx of students from abroad to Canada, the minister termed the situation as "out of control". The Canadian minister also said that the plan to reduce the number of foreign students was not mooted as a solution to the housing crisis in the country.
According to official data, there were over 8 lakh international students in Canada in 2022, compared to 2.75 lakh in 2012. Canada is a favourite educational destination for youngsters around the world as it has a liberal policy on work permits.
