The Government College at Chokli in Thalassery, Kannur, has been renamed Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Memorial Govt. College in honour of the late CPM leader.

Higher Education Minister R Bindu announced the decision on Wednesday. The minister said Assembly Speaker and Thalassery MLA A N Shamseer had suggested the name change.

Minister Bindu said former Home Minister Kodiyeri had taken several steps for the development of the college that was established in 2014.

According to the website of the college, Kodiyeri had helped establish the institution under the 'one college for one constituency' scheme of the state government.
The college is situated, at Olavilam in Chokli, close to the Mayyazhi River.

Kodiyeri died on October 1, 2022 at the age of 68 while undergoing treatment for cancer.
