Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government is unlikely to take a hurried decision on the directive of the High Court to consider including the marks obtained by Class 10 students on the Secondary School Leaving Certificates (SSLC). The present practice of separate mark list and certificates will continue for this year.

A student in Kozhikode had submitted a memorandum to the Minister for Education, demanding that the marks too should be published when the SSLC results are announced. The High Court passed the order last week directing the government to consider the memorandum and take a decision expeditiously, while it was considering a petition filed raising the same demand.

The court had also suggested that its order should not affect the declaration of the results. The General Education Department has taken the stand that mentioning only the grades in the certificates and not entering the marks was a policy decision taken by the government, and therefore, any changes would have to be made only after detailed discussions.

The certificates for this year have been printed in the same format as in the previous years. The details of the students and their grades are entered in the records at the Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan. The authorities of the department point out that including the marks too at this stage of the process would be very difficult.

If the marks are also included, the present Plus One admission process too would have to be altered in step with this. This too will create a crisis at this phase.

Meanwhile, organisations of the teachers have also demanded that marks should be included in the certificates. S Manoj, general secretary of the Aided Higher Secondary Teachers’ Association (AHSTA), alleged that omitting marks on certificates prevented ascertaining the the differing standards of the students.
