The National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) under the Atomic Energy Commission of India offers various scholarships to encourage higher studies and research in Mathematics.
NBHM has now announced a common test to select students for the Doctoral 2023 and Master’s 2022-23 scholarships. The three-hour test will be conducted on April 29, from 10.30 am. The test will be followed by an interview during May-June. Students can apply for either one or both scholarships.
After the test, two short-lists will be prepared for the interview – one for Master’s and the other for Doctoral scholarship.
There are 51 test centres, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. Applications could be submitted till April 5 on the website www.nbhmexams.in Question papers of previous years are available on this website.
Several institutions consider the scores of the test for their PhD / Integrated PhD admissions. They are, IISER Thiruvananthapuram / Pune / Mohali / Berhampur; Harish Chandra Research Institute, Prayagraj (Allahabad); Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai; NISER, Bhubaneswar and Kerala School of Mathematics, Kozhikode.
Mathematics covers Statistics, Mathematical Science and Applied Mathematics also.
Master’s
There are three sections for this scholarship: A two-year programme requiring a bachelor degree as eligibility for admission; the final two years of a five-year integrated master’s programme and the first two years of an integrated PhD programme needing a bachelor degree for admission.
The scholarship amount is Rs 6,000 per month for two years. Students currently pursuing the second year of a two-year programme would receive the scholarship for one year. Enrolment should be done during 2023-24 or earlier.
NBHM’s scholarship is not available for students who are already beneficiaries of DST-INSPIRE, KVPY or similar schemes.
Doctoral
These scholarships are available for four years of a PhD programme in Mathematics. If necessary, the scholarship could be extended to the fifth year. However, the academic progress of the student would be evaluated each year before the scholarship is granted for the subsequent year. The conditions require applicants to enroll for PhD at least by January 2024.
At the same time, the decision on granting the scholarship for applicants pursuing the six-year integrated M Ed course would be taken by the zonal coordinators.
The monthly scholarship amount is Rs 31,000 for the first two years and Rs 35,000 for the following years. In addition, annual grant of Rs 40,000 and house rent allowance at Central standard would be paid.
Beneficiaries of scholarships such as CSIR, UGC and DST-INSPIRE are not eligible for NBHM scholarship.
