Are you fascinated about the endless horizons of space? Here is a course for those who wonder about the universe and the space beyond our sky and stars. A two-year post-graduation course in Space Science is being offered by a few colleges in Kerala for astrophiles.
What is Space Science?
According to Mahatma Gandhi University, Space Science is an allied subject of Physics. The subject mainly deals with the fundamental theories of Physics as well as other specialised topics such as Astrophysics and Astronomy. The subject also comes under the Kerala Government's decision to include a number of new generation courses in 2020.
“This is a course that strives to answer the basic yet ultimate questions: How did our Earth and our Solar System form and evolve? What is our place in the universe? Where did life come from and are we alone in this vast universe?,” said Dr Manesh Michael, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Bharat Mata College, Thrikkakara, Ernakulam.
“Apart from all the core theory papers in MSc Physics, the course includes three other elective papers on Solar and Astrophysics, Plasma Physics and Introduction to Atmospheric and Space Science.
It also incorporates practical works in Astronomy and Space Physics labs. On the whole, the subject integrates 75 per cent of topics covered in MSc Physics as per the syllabus approved by PG Board of Science of Physics, MG University” he added.
Job Opportunities
The research-oriented course majorly opens door to opportunities in Space Science or Astronomy-related job posts such as Space Scientist, Research Associates and Scientific Assistants.
“Following post-graduation, candidates can also apply for teaching Physical Science in educational institutions. However, the subject basically evolves around the research aspect. Students are also being recruited to renowned institutions such as ISRO. It was also introduced in an aim to develop scientific temper and skills in students,” said Dr Manesh.
He added that the subject also offers a better scope for research as well as job opportunities abroad.
