Thrissur: Indian students who came back from China during the pandemic are struggling to get their visas processed in order to return to their universities. Currently, biometric testing facilities are available only in New Delhi and Kolkata. Around 23,000 students had returned from China. The parents complain that it would take at least three months to complete the testing at just two centres for all of these students.
Besides, the spike in airfare too has become a matter of concern for the students and their parents. The airfares have gone up around three times than what they had been paying earlier. Meanwhile, the Parents’ Association of Foreign Medical Graduates alleges that Kerala and Tamil Nadu haven’t paid heed to the Supreme Court’s instruction to provide at least two years of compulsory internship for foreign MBBS graduates who completed their courses via online during the pandemic period and had passed the FMGE exam here. Association President AD Jomy and secretary AR Rajesh said that biometric testing facilities should be arranged at Kochi or Chennai for the students from South Indian states.
Compulsory internship
New Delhi: Those who completed MBBS in foreign universities should do their compulsory internship in India at the medical colleges approved by the National Medical Commission.
The students who complete the Foreign Medical Graduate course should attend the one year Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship. NMC’s undergraduate medical education board has issued the latest directive after it was found out that many students often do internships at small clinics.
The circular instructs that the state medical councils should allow seats for those who pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination and provide internship facilities at the institutes where there are only PG courses including DnB.
