The letter was forwarded to the private institutes on 20 June as a new academic year is about to begin. With this, government fee structure would be applicable to around 75% of the 92,000 medical seats in the country.

However, many private institutes have decided to take the legal route against the central government’s decision. NMC has instructed that if the government quota is below 50% then the same fee structure would be applicable to the rest of the students (up to 50%) based on merit.

The order was issued following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that the fees in the private medical colleges would be reduced. Meanwhile, the authorities said that strict action would be taken against those who do not comply with this order.

The fee determination committees in each state too had stated that it would adopt measures to ensure that the order of the NMC is strictly executed. NMC had earlier informed that the latest order would be valid from this academic year onwards.
