National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) was founded by the central government under the Department of Atomic Energy to promote extensive research in the field of mathematics. Website: www.nbhm.dae.gov.in.

Applications for the NBHM scholarships could be submitted via the website www.nbhmexams.in until 27 May. Candidates who have enrolled for full-time PhD programs in Mathematics/ Applied mathematics at a university in India or other recognised institutions can apply. Besides, those who are expecting to be enrolled for these programs by 2023 January too could submit applications. There will be an application fee of Rs 500. Interested candidates can apply until 31 May by paying a late fee of Rs 750.

The applicants need to take a three-hour-long screening test that has been scheduled at 10.30 am on 18 June. There are test centres in all the major cities in India including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. Those who excel in the screening test would be shortlisted for an online interview in July. The final selection list would be published only after this.

The following institutes consider the score of the screening test for admission to PhD/ integrated MSc – PhD programs: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, Mohali and Berhampur; Harish Chandra Research Institute, Prayagraj; Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai and National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneshwar.

Scholarship duration

The scholarship will be awarded for four years. The monetary aid would be renewed every year after evaluating the academic progress of the candidate. Part – time research scholars are not eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship includes a grant of Rs 31,000 per month for the first two years and then Rs 35,000 per month for the rest of the duration. Besides, an annual contingency grant of Rs 40,000 and house rent too have been included in the scholarship. The aid would be extended to the fifth year, if the candidate is found to be eligible.
