Thenjipalam: Sisters Vidya and Vinci took home – Kizhakkekara House in Mundur, Palakkad – three medals from the Calicut University Athletics meet. K K Vidya struck gold in the 10,000 metres race and silver in the 5,000 metres. Younger sister K Vincy reaped gold in 100 metre hurdles.
Vidya, who undergoes training with international athlete P U Chitra, was at her fifth university meet this week. Vincy, a student of Palakkad Sreekrishnapuram VTB College, was making her debut and was inspired by her elder sister.
Vidya was drawn to the ground at the age of 13 by local children. She started off with 200 and 300 metres. Later, the trainer prompted her for 5,000 metres.
Vidya has several gains to be proud of, including a gold medal from the junior national meet.
Their father Krishnan, a daily-wage labourer, finds it hard to make ends meet. Vidya had a SAI scholarship until last year.
Calicut University Athletics meet saw 15 new records, 12 of which were in the men's events.
Double gold win for four
Bibin George of Christ College, Thomson Paulose of Sree Krishna, C Babita of Palakkad Kalladi College and U V Shruthi Raj of University Teaching Department bagged double gold medals.
