OnePlus 5, iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S8: a comparison

Ever since the launch of OnePlus One, the fan base of the Chinese handset developer grew in India. Now with the latest of their flagship phone OnePlus 5 is on sale, the company expects more. Last week, the phone went on sale in selected markets, including India.

Apparently, the company got a record number of pre-orders for their latest flagship model. Loaded with top-notch features like 8GB RAM, powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, superior camera features, and more, OnePlus 5 is expected to be a perfect competitor to premium smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 Plus. Here is a quick comparison.

OnePlus 5 launched in India, on Thursday, with some top-notch features like 8GB RAM, dual camera setup at the rear, 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 protection and more. Prices start at Rs 32,999.

Samsung Galaxy S8 boasts of an all-new design, ‘Infinity Display’ and supports up to 256 GB of storage. Samsung’s personal assistant Bixby is another major attraction. The prices start at Rs 56,999.

The 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant of OnePlus 5 is priced $479 (around Rs 31,000) and € 499 (roughly Rs 35,900) in the US and select European regions, respectively. Similarly, its top variant with 8GB RAM and 128 GB storage is priced $539 (approximately Rs 35,000), and € 559 (approximately Rs 40,000). OnePlus 5 prices in India starts at Rs 32,999 for the base model (64 GB internal storage and 4GB RAM).

On the other end, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is priced Rs 57,900 (MOP) for its 4GB RAM and 64GB storage model. Apple launched iPhone 7 Plus at Rs 72,000, Rs 82,000, and Rs 92,000 for its 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants, respectively. These are now available at Amazon, after a price cut, at Rs 57,000, Rs 65,000, and Rs 80,000, respectively.

Body & Design

OnePlus 5 boasts of a design built of anodizedd aluminum. While the front looks like its predecessor 3T, the rear panel has some resemblances to that of iPhone 7 Plus. Overall, the design looks premium from all angles. On the other end, Samsung Galaxy S8’s all-new design that follows 18.5:9 display aspect ratio remains more impressive.

Compared to OnePlus 3T, many improvements are visible in the display on the OnePlus 5. Its 5.5-inch full-HD Optic AMOLED display (1080x1920 pixels) supports sRGB and DCI-P3 colour standards. It also sports 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Samsung Galaxy S8, on the other end, holds an upper hand as it has a bigger screen with higher resolution. iPhone 7 Plus comes with Retina Display, which is known for its sharpness. The phone also has superior features like 3D Touch, Display Zoom, and Night Shift, among others to distinguish its LCD panel.

While the Galaxy S8 features a 5.8-inch (1440x2960 pixels) bezel-less 'Infinity Display' (as the company calls it), iPhone 7 Plus sports a 5.5-inch full-HD ion-strengthened display with a pixel resolution of 1080x1920 pixels.

Specifications

The OnePlus 5 runs on OxygenOS based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The phone supports dual-SIM (nano SIMs) with dual-standby. It receives power from powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with Adreno 540 GPU. As far as connectivity is concerned, it supports 4G LTE (with VoLTE), Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 3.5mm audio jack and USB Type-C (v2.0). The phone measures 154.2x74.1x7.25mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 153 grams.

iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, is powered by Apple's custom A10 Fusion chipset (2.34GHz quad-core) and runs on iOS 10 operating system and has 3GB RAM. Lightning port does the functions of charging and transferring data. It also performs music functions too. Its 2,900mAh battery is good enough for normal use. The phone also features a water-resistant body and comes with an NFC chip for Apple Pay payments.

Samsung has launched Galaxy S8, in select markets, with Snapdragon 835 SoC. The model made for Indian market is powered by an Exynos 9985 chipset and 3GB RAM. It comes with 64GB of inbuilt storage, which can further be expanded up to 256GB. The phone runs on Samsung’s own UX based on Android 7.0. Along with other connectivity features, it supports Type-C USB port.

Camera

Both OnePlus 5 and iPhone 7 Plus come with dual cameras at the rear. The OnePlus 5 features a 16-MP primary camera (Sony IMX398 sensor, 1.12-micron pixels and f/1.7 aperture) coupled with a 20-MP camera (Sony IMX350 sensor, 1-micron pixels and f/2.6 aperture). Features like autofocus, dual-LED flash, 4K video recording with EIS, etc. make the camera setup more attractive.

The iPhone 7 Plus sports dual rear cameras of 12MP each with f/1.8 and f/2.8 apertures, respectively, for the primary and telephoto cameras. The phone offers Bokeh effect in portrait mode. The rear camera is capable of capturing 2160p videos at 30fps (frames per second). It also supports slow-motion videos. Quad-LED, dual-tone flash, phase-detection autofocus, and 2x optical zoom, etc. are some of attractions of rear camera.

Considering selfie camera, the OnePlus 5 features a 16MP sensor at the front for capturing selfies. The Samsung Galaxy S8 sports an 8-MP shooter at the front. The iPhone 7 Plus sports a 7MP front facing camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The selfie camera of iPhone is loaded with features like face detection, HDR and panorama.
